A flag change is a change of the vessel’s “legal nationality.” It is undertaken for various reasons: sale to a new owner, cost optimization, leaving a jurisdiction with high requirements, or simply a change in fleet management strategy.
The main challenge is that the procedure leaves no room for error. If you miss the step of discharging encumbrances or incorrectly handle the deregistration, the vessel may become “frozen” for weeks – which is critical for a commercial vessel.
